Founding:
The school was first established in 1980 as a Primary School to provide educational instruction similar to what is obtained in Nigeria to children of Nigerian resident in Cotonou. The Secondary School section was established in September 1996. The school is a co-educational institution and aims at offering qualitative and balanced education at both the primary and secondary school levels
Location:
Nigerian International School, Cotonou is located in the highbrow Avenue de CENSAD, Marina in Cotonou. It is opposite the Benin Marina Hotel, in the drive-way to the airport, behind the Beninese Ministry of Finance. It is in a prestigious and serene environment suitable for effective teaching and learning.
Role of the Nigerian Embassy, Cotonou:
Right from inception, Nigerian International School has enjoyed the favour and support of the Nigerian Embassy, Cotonou. Through diplomatic channels, the Embassy secured the present site of the school at the Avenue de CENSAD. The school is directly under the supervision of the Embassy.
Class Size:
Pupils’/students’ population per class is 20 to 25. The classrooms are spacious and well ventilated.
Curriculum:
The curriculum is guided by the Nigerian National Policy on Education. At both the junior secondary school and senior secondary school levels students offer subjects in the sciences, arts, commerce, vocational, social sciences and technology.
Examinations offered by the school.
Internal: Evaluation is based on continuous assessment (CA) effected through regular class exercises, assignments, projects, tests and end-of-term examinations.
External Examinations:
The school prepares students, at the secondary school level, for the Junior secondary certificate examination (JSCE) organised by the National Examinations Council (NECO) Nigeria, and the Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (SSCE) organised by both NECO and WAEC (West Africa Examinations Council).
Sports & Games
The school places great importance on sports and games. The school has a standard s sports complex. Pupils/students participate in soccer, basketball, handball, volley ball etc.
Boarding House Facilities
The school runs a boarding house system for male and female student. There are hostel staff/workers that see to the day-to-day running, cleaning and general maintenance of the boarding houses.
School Population:
The primary school section provides education to early learners in the kindergarten (KG) and nursery classes- Nursery one and Nursery Two in additions to the normal Primary 1 to 6 classes. The population is 213 in the primary as at the end of this session while the population in the secondary section is 246.
